"Celebrating History, Heritage and the American Dream"

"Celebrating History, Heritage and the American Dream!" is this year's theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month September 15th through October 15th.  National Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month begins September 15 -- the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries:  Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  The month also includes the independence days of Mexico on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Belize on September 21, and continues with El Día de la Raza on October 12. 

Tango Crash Course for Beginners

Come learn! This super condensed crash course should get you prepared for some dancing at the upcoming Milonga (Argentine tango dance). Come, and bring your friends. You don’t need a partner, and its a great way to meet some new people around PhilaU and other universities around Philadelphia.  Everyone (Students, faculty, staff, from PhilaU, from other schools, etc.) is invited and welcome. This is a totally free lesson, but donations are accepted to pay for the instructor.

    Mexican Independence Day is organized by Philadelphia’s Mexican Cultural Center. Mexican Independence Day celebrates Mexican culture with food, music, dancing and crafts. Entertainment includes maria chi favorites and latino sounds.  Visitors can also explore the various tents featuring traditional Mexican crafts, clothing, and jewelry.  Mexican Independence Day is significant for all Mexicans because it represents the birth of a free country, proud of its own ancestry and its own identity. According to the Mexican Cultural Center, this day has become a traditional reunion of all Latino communities: Mexicans, Columbians, Venezuelans, Cubans etc, all celebrating the richness of their culture.

    Join the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month at PhilaU by attending the exhibit opening featuring Alberto Becerra, Juan Gomez, and Jose Ali Paz local Latino artists, who artists will be on hand to discuss their work and talk with students.

    Hispanic Heritage Month Flag Display

    During Hispanic Heritage Month flags from Spanish speaking countries from which we have students will be displayed from the Kanbar patio overlooking the Living Room.  This display is designed to recognize the contributions of our Latino/a International students and how their study here enrich the experience for all.

    Visit the Gutman Library throughout the month to see rotating displays of work by Latino/a authors and books about Hispanic architecture, literature and culture.

    Symposium on Immigration Law and Policy

    Tuttleman Center Auditorium (room 107)
    Sponsored by the Law & Society Major and Student Development Programs, Philadelphia University will host an open symposium regarding issues related to the controversial Arizona immigration bill and immigration issues in general. This event will be part of both Hispanic History Month and Constitutional Law Month. We will have expert speakers including Mr. Stu Bykofsky of the Daily News and student presentations concerning the myriad of issues presented in this topic.

    Cine Mágico: Experience the magical reality of Latin-American cinema.

    (El laberinto del fauno) Winner of Three Academy Awards!  “Alice in Wonderland for adults!”
      The screening will be preceded by Latino created or inspired shorts, and food will be served.

  • Celebrate the end of Hispanic Heritage Month with good food and friends.  Join us and help reorganize LASO as a student organization on-campus to provide the latino/a students a voice and raise awareness about the contributions and culture of Latino/a at PhilaU!

    Latin Food Luncheon & Dinner Series:
  • Long before Europeans "discovered" South America, the native populations knew how to cultivate and harvest an incredible array of foods. They developed elaborate irrigation systems, and terraced the steep Andean mountain slopes to make them more suitable for growing food. They grew corn, lima beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, chile peppers, avocados, peanuts, chocolate, and raised llamas and guinea pigs. Each region developed its own traditional dishes.  To this day, many latin foods, a central focus of many cultural traditions, have roots in pre-colonial dishes.
