LGBT HISTORY Month 2010

“For a community deprived of its history, LGBT History Month teaches our heritage, provides role models, builds community, and recognizes our extraordinary national and international contributions,” states Malcolm Lazin, Executive Director, Equality Forum

LGBT History Month was first celebrated in 1994.  October was chosen as the month for the celebration because National Coming Out Day, and October commemorated the first march on Washington by LGBT people in 1979.

    From
Lesbos to Over the Rainbow: A Crash Course on LGBT History
    Presentation by Dr. Phil Tiemeyer

    Tuesday, October 28, 11am
    Downs Hall, room 2
Homosexual and transgender desires have been experienced by some people in all ages and across all cultures.  Yet, something unique happened in the past century or so: these desires have morphed into what we now consider to be an ingrained part of one's personhood.  Essential to this change have been moments when gay men, lesbians, and transgendered individuals rose up to assert their dignity.  But just as important have been larger cultural developments, when American society either gradually embraced this diversity or fought such individuals in homophobic and sexist ways.  This crash course will be an informative introduction to LGBT History, but it will also include the lighter, more entertaining aspects of this journey "Over the Rainbow".  Session will be facilitated by Professor Phil Tiemeyer.
