As part of the Student Engagement Team, Commuter Life & Off-Campus Housing is a significant contributor to students' connection to Philadelphia University. We provide resources, programs, and services to meet the needs of Jefferson's off-campus student population. Whether it is welcoming new commuters to Jefferson, assisting students in finding off-campus housing and/or roommates, or continuing to build the commuter community, the Commuter Life Staff is dedicated to serving the needs of commuting and off-campus students.

All commuters are invited to join the Commuter Involvement Committee (CIC). CIC provides a forum for off-campus students to meet one another, participate in campus traditions, and discuss topics related to the off-campus student community. CIC meets the first  Thursday of the month at 1pm in DEC 002.

Commuter Services provides resources, programs and information to meet the needs of off-campus and commuting students as well as potential off-campus students.  We provide a range of engagement and involvement opportunities that assist in their connection to the campus community and one another.  Whether it is welcoming new commuters to Jefferson, assisting students in finding off-campus housing and/or roommates or continuing to build the commuter community, the Associate Director for Student Engagement and Commuter Assistants are dedicated to serving the needs of commuting and off-campus students.

NEW STUDENT INITIATIVES

  • Earn Commuter Cash (C-Cash) for your involvement, grades, utilization of campus resources and participation in the campus community. At the end of each semester, you can use your C-Cash to win prizes. Past prizes include SEPTA tokens, an external hard drive, PhilaU Gear, Nintendo Wii, Xbox360, blu ray player, iPod touch, Beats by Dre., TOMS, gift cards to local restaurants, and more. We get prize ideas directly from YOU so be prepared to earn your C-Cash and share your ideas!
  • Join the Commuter Assistants for One-on-One sessions at Ted's Barista for a snack on us and chat about concerns, interests or school.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING RESOURCES

We have tons of resources online to help you solidify your off-campus housing needs. Resources include:

  • Local Listings - Roommate Finder - Sublet Info  -  Free for faculty, staff, and students. offcampus.philau.edu allows students to review and post sublet and roommate listings. Students can search by school, so you have the opportunity to look at postings from students at other Philadelphia colleges. You can even review listings for local houses and apartment opportunities posted by individual landlords.
  • Our House & Security Guidelines is a pamphlet regarding safety in one's off-campus residence.
  • Early in the Spring Semester, Commuter Life & Off-Campus Housing, along with Off-Campus Partners, hosts an Off-Campus Housing Fair where area apartments come to campus and students can meet with representatives to discuss their off-campus needs.

When looking for off-campus housing.....

  • Please note if the residence is within the Fourth Council Educational Housing District (neighborhoods of East Falls, Roxborough, Manayunk, West Allegheny, West Philadelphia (north of Market Street), Overbrook Farms and Wynnefield). The Educational District Act (Bill #020482) limits the amount of unrelated individuals (no more than 3) that can live in a single dwelling. Residencies with the Fourth Council Educational Housing District that allow more than 3 unrelated individuals are out of compliance.
  • We recommend you only coordinate with landlords and rental agents have a valid housing renting license.
  • Additional guidelines, laws and policies relating to living off-campus can be found HERE.

Commuter Cash (C-Cash)

C-Cash is an incentive program to promote campus connection and involvement for first-year students who live off-campus. Students can earn C-Cash for attending campus events, turning in good grades and participating in campus life. At the end of the semester, students can use C-Cash to win various prizes.

Commuter Assistants (CAs)

Commuter Leaders are upper class, off-campus students who serve as resources and guides for first-year commuters. A CA’s primary responsibility is to help introduce new commuters and off-campus students to Jefferson and to assist them in their transition into college life. First-year commuters are assigned a CA before the academic year begins according to the first letter of their last name. Commuter Assistants are the main tool in connecting new commuting students with the campus community and one another.

City Ordinance for Commuter Students

The City of Philadelphia requires all college/university students who do not live on campus, but do live in the Fourth Council District (in a residence other than with their family) while attending school to supply the college or university with his or her local address and applicable vehicle registration information. The Fourth Council District includes the neighborhoods of East Falls, Roxborough, Manayunk, West Allegheny, West Philadelphia (north of Market Street),

Overbrook Farms and Wynnefield, and is also known as the Educational Housing District
