Recycle for Earth Day and Every Day

Philadelphia University is a recycling campus year-round. Saturday, April 22 is Earth Day -- a perfect day for each of us to be mindful of how we dispose of waste materials on campus.

When recycling, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to utilize containers and collection sites, which are available throughout the year, in offices, residence halls and other locations on campus, to honor the environment.

According to statistics provided by J.P. Mascaro & Sons, the University’s solid waste removal company, Philadelphia University recycled more than 86 tons of leaves, cardboard, office paper, newsprint, glass, plastic, aluminum and tin last year. The University has already exceeded that amount to over 90 tons for 2006.

“The bulk of the University’s recycling materials come from cardboard and leaf and grounds debris,” said Tom Becker, assistant vice president for operations.

Paper-based recyclables, including carbonless forms; computer, copier and office paper; envelopes; magazines; mail; and newspapers may be placed in trash cans with clear bags. Discard glass, plastic, steel and aluminum beverage or food containers in blue bins or recycling cans. Cardboard and corrugated cardboard can also be thrown away in blue dumpsters. Discard garbage in trash cans with dark bags or green dumpsters. Remember to deposit recyclables in the correct receptacle, as contamination is a difficult problem to overcome.

Founded in 1970, Earth Day celebrates the earth’s natural beauty and seeks to convey the importance of preserving its environment through a variety of individual and community activities.
