Philadelphia University Remembers Marianne Able

Philadelphia University’s 10th annual Marianne Able Scholarship Day proved to be a great success with the attendance and participation of many alumni, family, friends, students, faculty and staff.

Held Dec. 9 in the Athletic and Recreation Center, the event featured a silent auction of a variety of items, including the letters that formerly spelled “Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science” on Hayward Hall; a victorious men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader against Post University, where the men beat their competitors by one point in the final seconds of the game; and a special Marianne Able Scholarship presentation. In addition, the 2006 Women’s Soccer CACC Championship Banner was unfurled at halftime during the women’s basketball game. Chairs of the event were alumna Beth Beadle-Piszek ’82, a friend of Able’s daughter, and her husband, Bill.

Created by Able’s family after her death in 1996, the Marianne Able Scholarship provides financial assistance to motivated third- and fourth-year students who are in need of additional funds to complete their education. Able was formerly the University’s director of career services. The $5,000 raised from the annual auction and games will add to the endowed scholarship fund.
