The long career and many accomplishments of men’s basketball coach Herb Magee, one of the top-winning NCAA coaches of all time, will be celebrated Nov. 21 at the start of his 50th season at Philadelphia University, NBC10 reported Nov. 20.

“Herb Magee arrived on the Philadelphia Textile campus in 1959 and never left,” reports Dick Jerardi in the Nov. 20 Philadelphia Daily News. Since then, Coach Magee has been a standout student-athlete and has become one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, all at Philadelphia University. Jerardi and Magee talk about his career at PhilaU and what 50 years of basketball greatness means to Magee. “In his third season, the Rams (29-2) won their last 28 games and the Division II national championship. In his 40th season, Magee won for the 829th time, more than any coach in D-II history,” Jerardi reported.

Clara Henry, director of the Fashion Design program, lauded the career of retiring Destination Maternity founder Rebecca Mathias in The Philadelphia Inquirer Nov. 15. “She’s an astute business woman,” said Henry, who has been a consultant to the firm. And Mathias’ commitment to the keeping the business in Philadelphia has given “opportunities to many,” she added.

The Lace in Translation exhibition currently on display at The Design Center was featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer Home and Design section Nov. 13. The exhibit was inspired by The Design Center’s collection of historic lace and Philadelphia’s renowned, but now defunct, Quaker Lace Company. “But Philadelphia is once again a leader on lace, thanks to the Design Center at Philadelphia University’s exhibition “Lace in Translation,” the Inquirer reported. Carla Bednar, assistant director, and Nancy Packer, collections curator, were featured in the story.

Graphic design alumna Melissa Levenduski ‘07 and her successful web and graphic design firm Inverse Paradox were featured in Bucks & Montgomery Living (November 2009). The firm, co-founded two years ago by former PhilaU student Neil Harner, has six employees and more than 600 clients. “When I graduated with all of my design experience and knowledge, I took the reins and was able to visualize things and understand what we were going to achieve creatively within the company,” Levenduski said.
