Natalie Nixon, professor of Fashion Industry Management at Philadelphia University, was interviewed in a Thurs., June 25 Philadelphia Inquirer article on the current economic effects on the retail industry and consumer buying. The article highlighted how many companies are shedding unprofitable stores, laying off employees, and selling assets to generate cash as profits and sales have plummeted. “That kind of scaling back, that trimming down that individuals are having to do, is a microcosmic reflection of what these corporations are needing to do,” Nixon said.

Philadelphia University’s new Provost Randy Swearer listed in the Mon., June 22 Philadelphia Inquirer’s “People in the News.” The listing notes that Swearer was formerly the dean at Parsons The New School for Design and a faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin.

Matthew Sandy, a 2008 graduate of the Landscape Architecture program, designed a garden inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for a local family, the June 19 Philadelphia Inquirer reported. “With my love of plants and nature and appreciation and love that I started having for design, I realized landscape architecture was right for me,” said Sandy, a designer at Laurel Hill Gardens in Chestnut Hill.

Lynn Tubman, who recently left the position of associate athletic director at PhilaU to become director of athletics at Chestnut Hill College, was featured June 11 in the Chestnut Hill Local. Of her years at PhilaU, Tubman said, “So much of the success there is due to the leadership Tom Shirley has provided for the last 20 years, and his ability to grow and manage the department.”
