Are you the one your friends call when they want decorating advice?
Then you should consider enrolling in Philadelphia University’s Interior Decorating Certificate Program. This non-credit program is geared toward those wishing to gain knowledge of the essentials of interior decorating, either for use in a career or for personal satisfaction. A certificate of completion will be awarded to students completing this eight-course sequence. Class handouts and some materials are included in the course fees. Some classes may require the purchase of books or other materials. Certain field trips are required. Students can complete the program at their own pace. Courses are offered in the fall, spring and summer, with day and evening sections available on a rotating schedule.

- Interior Decorating Fundamentals (No Prerequisite) - offered fall, spring and summer
- Space Planning (Prerequisite: Fundamentals) - offered fall and spring
- Introduction to Textiles & Materials (Prerequisite: Fundamentals) - offered spring only
- Lighting (Prerequisite: Fundamentals and Space Planning) - offered fall and spring
- Historic Styles (Prerequisites: Fundamentals, Space Planning, Introduction to Textiles & Materials) - offered fall only
- Color Workshop (No Prerequisite) - offered fall, spring and summer
- Drawing for Interiors (No Prerequisite) - offered summer and fall
- Residential Decorating (Prerequisites: Fundamentals, Space Planning, Introduction to Textiles & Materials and Lighting) - offered twice a year, schedule varies
Electives: (No Prerequisites: Although not required for the certificate, students are strongly encouraged to take these courses to enhance their knowledge of the interior decorating field.)

Interior Decorating Fundamentals
Introduction to the field and first course taken for the certificate program. Covers styles, furniture arrangement and construction, color, flooring, window treatments and lighting.

Tuesday, January 19 to March 23; 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
One day-time field trip will be scheduled in lieu of one evening session.

Color Workshop
Comprehensive hands-on workshop that investigates color theory, pigments, application of materials and appropriate use of color. Students will learn how to specify color needs to manufacturers, architects and craftsmen. Assignments are designed to explore aspects of color interaction and to solve site-specific color problems.

Space Planning
Studio course focusing on the use of drafting tools and skills needed to execute floor plans from the basic to more enhanced presentations.
Prerequisite: Interior Decorating Fundamentals

Wednesday, March 31 to May 5; 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Lighting
Learn about lighting and how it affects environments. Classes introduce classification, lamping options and practical uses of light in residential and commercial applications. Hands-on experience provides knowledge on how choice of lighting will look in a room. Final presentation will consist of a floor plan with student’s own selection of fixtures.

Introduction to Textiles and Materials
Study the “tech” behind the art of decorating. All of the major finish materials used in today’s interiors are covered, from fibers and fabrics to wall coverings and hard surface materials. Investigate the “why” behind the art of decorating to help you make your selections more appropriate to a particular interior. Students will keep a notebook into which class notes, sketches and handouts are inserted. The notebook will serve as the basis for a project. Fee includes reference guide.

Monday, March 22 to April 26; 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Residential Decorating*
Decorating for others is the focus of this course, along with space planning and budget practicalities for those who live in and use the space. Interviewing clients and current design trends in furniture, color and fabrics are also covered. Please note that in lieu of two evening classes, one six-hour daytime field trip will be scheduled.
Prerequisite: Interior Decorating Fundamentals, Space Planning, Introduction to Textiles & Materials and Lighting.
