BridgePathways at Philadelphia University

Intensive English Language Program

Through a partnership with Bridge-Linguatec, students conditionally admitted to Philadelphia University have the opportunity to complete their English Language proficiency requirements at our campus-based BridgePathways center. In addition to language skills, the Academic English Program offers essential U.S. social and cultural immersion and academic readiness skills needed for a successful transition to PhilaU degree programs.

Placement in one of the six levels of the Academic English Program is determined by a placement test.  Students conditionally admitted to a bachelor’s degree program must complete a minimum of Level 4.  Students conditionally admitted to a master’s degree program must complete a minimum of Level 5.

Each session is 8-weeks with new classes beginning in August, October, January and March.  Summer sessions are also available.

For more information about the program, visit http://www.bridgepathways.com/Preparation-Academic-English.

Beyond the Classroom

Workout in the fitness center, enjoy dinner with friends in the dining hall, find a quiet study space in the library…and more.  Students in the BridgePathways program have access to all of the same resources and amenities as other PhilaU students.

Housing Information

Requirements for Conditionally Admitted:  Bachelor’s Degree Students

Students enrolling in a bachelor’s degree program and whose permanent residence is more than 30 miles (48 km) away must live on campus for two years.  This includes conditionally admitted students studying in the BridgePathways Intensive English Program.  Exceptions are made for:

  • Students from beyond 30 miles (48 km) who plan to live with family members (confirmation required)
  • Students over the age of 20 at the time of enrollment
  • Married students
  • Students with dependents

Requirements for Conditionally Admitted:  Master’s Degree Students

Students enrolling in a master’s degree program are not required to live on-campus.  Philadelphia University does not offer housing options exclusively for master’s degree students.  Students interested in living on-campus, including conditionally admitted students studying in the BridgePathways Intensive English Program will be placed in any available location in a residence hall, townhouse or apartment owned or leased by Philadelphia University.  Most rooms and other housing units are shared with other bachelor or master’s degree students, including conditionally admitted students in the BridgePathways Intensive English Program.

For information about off-campus housing options visit: http://www.philau.edu/reslife/OffCampus.html.

Housing Deposits & Agreements

To reserve on-campus housing, Intensive English Language students must submit a $250 housing deposit to the PhilaU International Admissions Office prior to their arrival on campus and complete the Housing Application and Agreement.

Signing the Housing Application and Agreement is like signing a lease for housing off-campus.  This means that the agreement is binding for one academic year – August until May.  For BridgePathways Intensive English Program students who enter October, January or March, the agreement is binding from the beginning of the first session until May.  With advanced permission, conditionally admitted master’s degree students enrolling in BridgePathways Intensive English Language Program may opt for short-term on-campus housing agreements:

  • For August session starts – August to December
  • For October session starts – October to December
  • For January session starts – January to May
  • For March session starts – March to May

Housing Assignments

Conditionally admitted students studying in the BridgePathways Intensive English Language Program during the 2014-2015 academic year will be housed in Scholler Hall.  Scholler Hall is a traditional-style co-ed residence hall.  Two students occupy a room, with shared bathroom facilities in each wing.  There are no kitchen facilities and students are required to sign-up for the University’s 14 or 19 meals per week dining plan.  For more information about Scholler Hall, visit:  http://www.philau.edu/reslife/ResidentialFacilities/Scholler.html

Meal Plan Information

Any student may opt to enroll in one of the University’s meal plans.  Students living on-campus in one of the traditional residence halls are required to purchase a meal plan as there are no kitchen facilities in these locations.

For information about meal plans, visit: http://www.philau.edu/reslife/MealPlanInfo.html.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and related fees for the BridgePathways Intensive English Program are paid by the student directly to Bridge Linguatec.  For more information, visit:  http://www.bridgepathways.com/Philadelphia-University

All other fees are paid by the student directly to Philadelphia University.  The University bills students by the academic semester.  Conditionally admitted students in the BridgePathways Intensive English Language Program who enter in October or March will only be charged for half of the academic semester charges.
