FACULTY & STAFF BIOGRAPHIES

 

William R. Brown, Ph.D., teaches Writing Seminars I and II as well as literature courses.  Dr. Brown received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.  He has participated in the development of the College Studies Program and current writing courses.  His research interests include pedagogy and American literature.

 

Valerie Hanson, Ph.D., teaches Writing Seminars I and II.  She is an Assistant Professor of Writing in the School of Liberal Arts.  Professor Hanson is also a published poet.  She concentrates her research on the rhetoric of science and design.  Professor Hanson received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, M.A. from Temple University, and Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University.

Lea Jacobson, M.F.A., teaches Writing Seminars I and II.  She attended Sarah Lawrence College and received her degree in Creative Writing.  Professor Jacobson also works as a freelance writer on topics ranging from biotechnology to wine.

 

Patricia Malay, M.A. and M.S., teaches Writing Seminar I and II (Science).  She has a B.S. in biology from Juniata College, a B.S. in Nursing from Jefferson University, and an M.S.N nurse practitioning from Georgia State University. After many years in nursing, she returned to graduate school for her M.A. in English from Rutgers University-Camden and has taught writing and rhetoric at Penn State's main campus as well as Philadelphia University. She has contributed to several nursing books as a clinical editor, and published book reviews in the Drexel On-line Journal.

Nancy Sorkin, A.B., teaches writing, literature, and performing arts courses at Philadelphia University.  In addition, she is Lead Professional Writing Tutor in the Learning & Advising Center.  Her academic background includes an A.B. in history from Cornell University and graduate work in English and American Literature at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Russ Sutton, M.S., teaches Fundamentals of College Writing in the Writing Program and a variety of other writing/communication courses for the Office of Continuing and Professional Studies. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Ohio University, in advertising and magazine journalism.  Since 1974, Professor Sutton has been president of Sutton Advertising Agency Inc.
